Job Summary
**This is a Limited Appointment position for duration of one year.**
The candidate for this position will need an excellent understanding of ophthalmic practice and patient care, with knowledge and proficiency in computer skills, telephone etiquette, and electronic health record system. The candidate will be expected to assist in scheduling appointments based on the e-consults, calling patients to confirm their appointments, as well as other administrative tasks as assigned.
This position is also expected to assist and fill in for patient intake (visual acuity, eye pressure check, and dilation) when there are unexpected absences of existing staff. Carries out patient responsibilities with an emphasis on quality patient care and customer service. Works as a team member with other staff and carries out duties professionally.
This position may assist with restocking clinic and inpatient areas with supplies, May be asked to assist with preparation of patient rooms.
Note: This position requires a physical/phone screen.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.
For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description
The UCSF Department of Ophthalmology is one of the leading ophthalmology departments in clinical care, training, and research nationwide. The Department of Ophthalmology is a one of the largest recipients of federal grant funds among peer departments and has been in the top 10 in NIH funding.
Additionally, we have been the #1 recipient of the Research to Prevent Blindness funding nationwide with nearly $1.2 million granted in a single year. Overall, the department has a wide-ranging portfolio of 60 active research grants.
Ophthalmology reached annual patient charges of $60,000,000 with a wRVU total of 100,000 per year.
The department’s overall operating budget is approximately $25,000,000 per year. Ophthalmology conducts its patient care, teaching, research, and public service activities currently at multiple UCSF campuses: Parnassus, Mt. Zion, Veteran’s Administration Medical Center (VAMC), Zuckerberg San Francisco General (ZSFG), and Benioff Children’s Hospital at Mission Bay. The department occupies over 60,000 of assignable square feet of space at various sites across UCSF campuses for research, academic and clinical activities.
The department supports 25 full-time clinical faculty, 10 basic scientists, over 50 volunteer and visiting faculty, 12 postdoctoral scholars, 15 residents, seven clinical fellows, graduate students, visiting researchers, as well as clinic and research staff for a total of over 235 FTEs (including 63 UCSF Health employees)
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent including one year related experience; and or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Ability to use good judgement and work independently
- Excellent customer service and communication/interpersonal skills, both over the telephone and directly
- Able to sit at a computer terminal with telephone for extended periods of time
- Strong computer skills
- Proven ability to deal with a wide variety of individuals
- Ability to deal sensitively and effectively with patients
- Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills
- Demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology
- Ability to establish cooperative working relationships with patients, co-workers, & physicians
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Windows; ability to use an electronic medical record system.
- Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment while working with a diverse subject population; prioritize multiple projects to ensure the completion of essential tasks by deadlines
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in a hospital ambulatory care settings or private practices
- Bilingual or multi-lingual capability.
- COA certified
- Current LVN license
